Why We Joined One Percent for the Planet

Seemingly every part of our lives involves technology today. From the moment we wake up to the moment we fall asleep, we continually interact with digital tools.

And generally speaking, I believe that’s a good thing. I’m a big proponent of leveraging technology to improve our lives. Digital transformation has made life easier, driven down costs, and allowed us to expand our horizons.

In the work we do at Roloff Consulting, digital tools enable business leaders to create content online, build an audience, and grow their business by becoming online educators.

But there can be too much of a good thing.

If we spend too much time on digital tools, it begins to harm rather than help us. In our work helping businesses with digital strategy, it’s easy to become “chronically online.” This can leave little time to think, move, and truly live.

We believe in the importance of intentionally disconnecting from technology and moving from digital to analog.

The Benefits of Disconnecting

Stepping away from technology allows us to be:

  • Happier: Too much screen time has been linked to anxiety and depression. Spending time in nature can help restore balance.
  • More Thoughtful: Online, we’re often consuming rather than creating. Disconnecting gives us space to think, imagine, and innovate.
  • Healthier: Our bodies aren’t designed to sit in front of a computer all day. Fresh air, sunshine, and movement are essential for our physical well-being.

That’s why a fundamental principle of Roloff Consulting is to disconnect. We embrace the yin and yang of digital tools and time in nature.

We practice this personally with regular outdoor walks, cycling, trail running, kayaking, and any other way we can get outdoors.

We know that nature can be the best source of inspiration. To create, we need space.

Our Commitment to Disconnecting

In 2024, we joined One Percent for the Planet, committing to donate 1% of our total revenue to environmental organizations.

Our primary donations go to the Ice Age Trail Alliance, a nonprofit that maintains the Ice Age Trail, a thousand-mile footpath that winds through Wisconsin.

This organization holds special importance to us. Living near the trail’s southern terminus, we’ve enjoyed its beauty in multiple locations across the state. It’s not just a place to hike—it’s a space to reconnect, reflect, and recharge.

By supporting the Ice Age Trail Alliance, we’re giving back to an organization that has given so much to us and countless others who find solace and adventure in the natural world.

Looking Ahead

Joining One Percent for the Planet aligns with our belief in balancing digital and analog. It’s not just a commitment to the environment—it’s a commitment to our values.

We’re excited to continue supporting the spaces and organizations that inspire us to live fully, think creatively, and move freely. Because when we invest in nature, we’re caring for ourselves and the generations to come.
